IT WAS a willingness to give back to the community that sparked Gerard Rennick’s desire to become a senator for the LNP.
RECENTLY elected senator Gerard Rennick, born and bred in Chinchilla, where his dad was a farmer and his mum a midwife, says he will always stand up for the region.
LNP Senator for Queensland Gerard Rennick today opened the new Nagle Building including learning areas, student amenities, verandah and canteen at St Thomas More College that was funded by the Federal Liberal National Government.
The Liberal-National Government is standing by farmers, their families and communities in Queensland who continue to struggle with drought conditions. We recognise this drought is tough, and we have responded with direct and immediate support to help the whole community.
Just prior to my maiden speech, during the winter break I undertook a two-week regional and rural listening tour of my home state, because on this side of the chamber we take the concerns of the people living in regional Queensland seriously. I had the opportunity to meet with community groups and not-for-profits such as the Royal Flying Doctor Service, mayors and councillors from our state regional councils and of course lots of farmers and small business people.
The Australian economy is on the road and moving forward. It reminds me of the Mad Max scene with the V8 Interceptor charging forward. I find it interesting that Labor Senator Ayres should accuse us of closing down the car industry, because back in 1987 it was actually Button and his tariff plans that put it under pressure.
Mr President, I would like to acknowledge my colleagues in the chamber and special guests in the gallery who are here today. I would also like to thank the people of Queensland and the LNP for the faith they have placed in me to represent them over the next six years.
