The Great Barrier Reef should be controlled by Australia, not UNESCO

I recently called out UNESCOs threats and fear mongering about the Great Barrier Reef.

It should not be imposing harsh conditions on our farmers and tourist industry in particular in the name of climate change.

The GBR is at record levels for the second year in a row.

We don’t need to waste billions of dollars on scientists coming up with bogus claims about the health of our reef that are then used to destroy jobs in real industries that generate so much for our country.👇

“Australia must take “urgent” action to protect the Great Barrier Reef, including setting more ambitious climate targets, the UN’s cultural organization has warned.

The draft decision welcomed some of the steps taken by Australia, including on water quality around the reef and restrictions on gill-net fishing.

But it expressed “high concern” about land clearing threatening water quality, and said Australia should “set more ambitious emission reduction targets.”

STATEMENTS BY SENATORS
Renewable Energy, Great Barrier Reef

Senator RENNICKThe other thing I want to discuss is last week’s report by the Australian Institute of Marine Science on coral cover on the reef. I’m pleased to say that there is record coral cover for the second year in a row. UNESCO isn’t going to put the reef on the endangered list as a result of this report, but that doesn’t mean that UNESCO isn’t going to stop dragnet fishing on the reef by 2027. They still demand that Australia spend billions of dollars for research on the reef and impose unfair conditions on land based activities along the reef. That is completely unfair. It is about time we stood up for our own sovereignty and stopped taking orders from UNESCO.
