The COVID-19 vaccines being administered in Australia require two doses to provide the best immunity. The first dose helps the immune system create a response against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, with the second dose boosting the immune response to ensure long-term protection against COVID-19. Whilst partial protection against COVID-19 may be as soon as 12 days after the first dose, this protection is likely to be short lived. A two-dose course is recommended for all individuals for optimal protection.
